FROM INQUIRER:

His father is from Southern Leyte, his mother from Quezon. He grew up in Makati and, the last two years, his family lived in a rented home in Cainta.

Seven years ago, his mother, Eva, left to work in Dubai. Each visit home, her son would try to convince her not to leave again, but she said it was hard making ends meet, and he seemed to understand.

When the UPCAT results were released in December 2013, he sent his mother a screenshot of his name on the list of students who passed.

Carl was always telling his family about how good (magagaling) his classmates were but at his wake, his batchmates told Eva that Carl was the one who excelled, his classmates trying to “recruit” him whenever there were group projects because he did such good work.

Little did they know that Carl was grappling with depression and after one semester in UP, he had to stop schooling. While dealing with his depression, he was able to start a small sari-sari store with the money sent by his mother. Eva explained that Carl wanted to make his mother’s earnings grow and to use this to care for his grandmother and a younger cousin.

His family described him as a homebody with close family ties. He was an introvert but did have a circle of friends. On the rare occasions that he would not return home for the night, he would be sure to text his family.

FROM GMA:

Arnaiz was killed by Caloocan police officers on August 18 after allegedly staging a hold-up against a taxi driver. After Carl went missing for ten days, the family received a text message from a funeral home on August 28 saying they found him.

Adding to the pain of the family was the evidence suggesting Carl was tortured before his death.

The Public Attorney’s Office (PAO) found handcuff marks on both of the boy’s wrists, along with scars and bruises on his face.

“Pinahirapan pa nila ‘yong apo ko, ‘yun po talaga ang masakit para sa akin, hindi naman kasi masamang bata ‘yan, bakit nila gaganunin?” Norma said. “Sana kinulong nalang nila kung ano, sana hindi na nila pinatay, hindi na nila tinorture,” the grandmother added.

FROM INTERAKSYON:

A spot report signed by Caloocan City police chief Senior Superintendent Chito Bersaluna, who was sacked over Delos Santos’ slay, stated that authorities used social media as basis to establish the identity of Arnaiz.

The taxi driver, Tomas Bagcal from Baesa, Caloocan City, did not include in his sworn statement the plate number of the taxi he was driving when he was allegedly robbed by Arnaiz. His affidavit also did not state the operator of the taxi and driver’s license number.
