Ex-convict killed, companion injured in shooting

An ex-convict was gunned down Tuesday by six unidentified suspects in a deadly incident that also critically injured his companion in Malabon City.

Police said Manuel Cruz, 59, of Navotas City, died on the spot due to multiple bullet wounds in the head and body. His companion Cris Villanueva is in critical condition after suffering a gunshot wound in the abdomen.

Initial investigation disclosed that Cruz and Villanueva were on a motorcycle and about to leave a cockpit arena at Del Monte Avenue in Barangay Potrero when six men on three motorcycles shot them at around 5 p.m.

Case investigator PO2 Rockymar Binayug said Cruz, who sustained multiple gunshot wounds, fell on the ground while Villanueva managed to speed off on board the motorcycle despite of his injury.

Villanueva left his motorcycle along Samson Road in Caloocan City and brought himself to the Manila Central University Hospital, according to authorities.

Two empty shells of a .45 caliber pistol, two empty shells of .9 mm pistol, and a deformed bullet from an unknown gun were recovered by authorities from the scene.

Witnesses reportedly claimed that the two victims had just won around P300,000 from bets. However, police said no such amount was recovered from the scene.

Reports disclosed that Cruz was detained on drug charges during 1990s while Villanueva was included in the drug watchlist of the Navotas City police. (Kate Javier)
