A DRUG surrenderer was killed in an alleged shootout with the police in Sitio Sambag, Barangay Cantumog, Carmen at 11 a.m. last Sunday.

Police identified the fatality as Junsiel Kiamco Awing, who succumbed to gunshot wounds in the left leg, abdomen, and chest.

Investigation showed that a team of five policemen tried to arrest the suspect after he went wild and destroyed the door and windows of a house owned by Elenita Bejoc Roble, 45.

Awing allegedly threatened to kill Roble and the rest of her family for no apparent reason.

Chief Insp. Christian Torres, the town police chief, said they heard reports that Awing and Roble had a relationship, but Roble denied it.

He said Awing often ran amok when high on drugs or when drunk in the past.

After arriving in Sambag, PO3 Roger Delan, PO2 Jeffrey Bellita, PO2 Ronald Anoche, PO2 Glenn Molina and PO2 Cristito Aresco saw the suspect holding a .38 revolver and smashing a window screen.

Molina shouted to the suspect that they were police officers after they heard Awing’s death threat to the Robles.

Awing aimed his gun at Molina and fired it twice, but he failed to hit the policeman. Molina retaliated and hit him.

The policemen rushed Awing to Cebu Provincial Hospital in Danao City, where he was declared dead on arrival by the doctor.

The revolver loaded with three bullets and two empty shells was recovered.

After he surrendered, Awing took part in a community-based program, but Torres believed the suspect still continued his illegal drug habit. (KAL)
